🇮🇳 Tiranga, Tricolour & the Pocket Square Controversy — Facts Before Opinions PM Modi ji’s Independence Day pocket square has sparked a debate online. Some are calling it an insult to the Indian National Flag, while others say it was simply a use of the national colours—not the National Flag itself. So, before supporting or criticising anyone, let’s look at the law and the facts. The Flag Code of India, 2002 lays down rules for the display and handling of the National Flag. For example, when the actual National Flag is displayed vertically, the saffron band is to be on the observer’s left. 🇮🇳 (Press Information Bureau) The Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 also specifically deals with disrespect to the Indian National Flag and its representations. (India Code) But here is the important distinction: three colours arranged on clothing do not automatically become the National Flag. The question is whether the item is legally a representation of the National Flag—not simply whether it contains saffron, white and green.
