Why Does the Sun Appear During the Day? ☀️🌍 The Sun is a star—so why do we see it during the day instead of at night? The answer lies in Earth’s rotation and the Sun’s enormous brightness. Earth spins on its axis once approximately every 24 hours. When your part of Earth rotates toward the Sun, sunlight reaches the surface and we experience daytime. As Earth rotates away from the Sun, that side enters night, while another part of the planet faces the Sun. The Sun appears much brighter than other stars because it is our nearest star, located about 150 million kilometers (93 million miles) away. Other stars may be enormous and extremely bright, but they are vastly farther away, making them appear as tiny points of light in our night sky.
