Varahamihira studied the sky, but his curiosity did not stop there. Working in Ujjain during the 6th century, he became a major scholar of astronomy and mathematics. His Pancha-Siddhantika brought together five earlier astronomical traditions. Through this work, knowledge from texts now lost survived for future generations. He refined sine tables used in astronomical calculations. His Brihat Samhita explored subjects ranging from celestial movements and rainfall to architecture, water sources, plants and precious stones. More than 1,400 years ago, Varahamihira showed us that knowledge does not live in separate boxes. How many of us learnt his name in school?
